when i export from rhino to dwg, in 4 or 5, my blocks lose their link between instances. I thought it was possible to keep this intact. Can anyone help?

Ask for help / question about worksessions
« on: July 15, 2009, 02:10:36 PM »
Does anyone out there use worksessions?

I am working on a really huge project which I have had to break out into separate files and recombine in a worksession file. I am more used to using xrefs in autocad and I really would like a way for the files which have been referenced to be referenced using a relative path and not a fixed one. Everytime I move my files the whole thing breaks down and it seems like there should be a way to move from computer to computer with the files and have it still work.

Any ideas?

Ask for help / cinching together trimmed surface edges
« on: July 02, 2009, 12:50:41 PM »
Hi

I have no idea how to do what I need to do - take two surfaces with matching edges that are not together and bring them in alignment. In overhead or plan view they metch up perfectly but in elevation they are at different heights and not in a constant way. if I could I would go around and adjust each point individually but since they are trimmed surfaces it seems like it's impossible to edit the edge curves individually...any ideas on how to fix this problem?

thanks so much in advance

Ask for help / seeking dvice on section drawing workflow
« on: June 12, 2009, 12:35:03 PM »
Hi
I am looking at ideal ways to make a section from a rhino 3d model. Ideally there would be something like sketchup's section plane tool or formz's clip hither yon which both not only clip the model but also identify the surfaces being sliced. Is there anything like this for rhino?

Are my only options really just to trim half the model away? Is that how architects create their sections?

I am open to all options - even plugins.

Thanks for the advice, in advance.

Ask for help / help with simple modeling operation
« on: May 20, 2009, 10:54:55 AM »
i

I am having a problem with a basic modeling operation . I have a series of curved paths - that curve in all directions - and I would like to sweep a rectangular section across them but maintain their orientation along the path's length. More concretely, I want the horizontal length to remain parallel with the xy plane of the model so that this surface could represent a path or walkable surface.

I have played around with the various ways of producing perpendicular planes to the curves or frames and then adding an "align planes" component but invariably there are always some planes that are rotated 90 degrees to the others. This is the most troubling part of the modeling issue, but I am also wondering if I should be sweeping along a path or placing the section at intervals and then lofting.

I realise this might seem really elementary...but I'm not sure how to deal with it.

Thanks so much in advance.

Hi

I want to do something that seem really simple - i have linework in autocad that I want to bring into rhino but when it comes in it arrives as polygonal mesh elements. I have looked everywhere for a way to convert this some how to polylines or curves but I can't find anything...

any ideas? seems like it should be really simple...
thanks!

Ask for help / is there a faster way to add missing mesh faces?
« on: April 29, 2009, 11:02:59 AM »
I have been struggling with a massive landscape mesh that is missing many triangular faces all over the place. I am looking for a much faster way to add these needed faces instead of moving progressively from one to the next clicking first one edge and then the next -does anyone know of a good way to do this?

Ask for help / help with clipping planes
« on: April 11, 2009, 10:57:39 AM »
I need to use clipping planes for something and I have no experience with them. May seem trivial but once I have made one or several, how do I see them? How do I delete them? modify them? turn them on or off?

I can't find any info on this anywhere?

Modeling / quick random surface for water or ground
« on: April 08, 2009, 05:20:24 PM »
Hi

does anyone know of a quick way to a get a "noise"y surface...it's pretty easy in max but I can't figure out a quick way to geenerate a random surface in rhino. Anyone have any quick ideas?

thanks

Ask for help / help cleaning up massive site mesh, holes
« on: March 25, 2009, 01:38:54 PM »
Hi

I am no expert with meshes and that's why I'm here. I was given a very large mesh representing a site terrain but it was in separated pieces. I have joined the pieces together, and have checked mesh and done as much I could think possible to make it clean and reduce some of its triangles.

the problem is there are visible holes in a number of places and I would like them filled - whether or not I 3d print the thing, it doesn't look good inrenderings. I tried the fill holes command but since my mesh is more a surface than a solid it connected the outer edges to one another. I'm wondering what the best approach to deal with the holes is. Do I add depth or thickness to the mesh and repeat the fill mesh holes command? Or is there something else? I tried aligning vertices but it was very tedious and I ended up severely disturbing the mesh in the process

if you have any ideas, I could really use some right now...

thanks

Ask for help / convert mesh to curves
« on: January 26, 2009, 01:47:46 AM »
hi

i have a mesh that was produced from pt reconstruction toolset through a delaunay mesh operation. I need the edges that make up this mesh in separate curves. I tried turning the mesh into a polysurface and the exploded that a couple of times which worked except for that I had duplicate curves where to adjoining surfaces met. Any ideas how I might get single edges on their own?

thanks

Ask for help / mesh from points using the mesh tools plugin
« on: January 14, 2009, 07:08:51 PM »
hi

I have a series of points that are not ordered and I was looking into ways of generating surfaces or meshes from them.

I know of delaunay triangulation but I just looked into meshfrompoints command in the mesh tools plugin and I don't really understand how the mesh being generated - does anyone know anything about it? I don't know where to find out how it is operating...

thanks

Ask for help / export to illustrator help
« on: November 26, 2008, 04:57:16 PM »
sort of new to rhino. I'm trying to setup a workflow that goes from rhino to aurocad and illustrator but I am having getting what I want in both cases.

for illistrator:
I love how the layers are preserved but I am getting the isocurves of surfaces as lines - I want the equivalent of a hidden line rendering - I was on technical shade view when i exported but that didnt seem to work, any ideas?

for autocad:
I would like to be able to continue to draft here, since it's what I'm most comfortable with but I would like to preserve layer separations - is this possible?

thanks!

Hi

I stumbled on this page for a rhino plugin that arrays objects along a curve and I am impressed  - not only by the plugin itself but the renderings depicting its use.

http://www.rhino3d.cz/clanky/zasuvne-moduly/arraycrvplus-1-0.html

Scroll down the page to see examples of images that combine soft shadows overlaid with technical line drawing. I bet there's some post processing involved but even to get the separate layers I'm lost when it comes to Rhino. I am used to using things like Vray in Max...I'm not much of a render specialist but this is PRECISELY what I want and I don't know where to begin with Rhino. I am open to purchasing render plugins, but in any case I bet some of the experts out there might be able to properly advise me.

Thanks!

Ask for help / looking for example of network graph
« on: October 28, 2008, 09:48:27 AM »
hi

i am new to object oriented programming and I am trying to find an example of a network graph (maybe one using a force directed algorithm) that reads a file and produces nodes and links (edges or lines) between them. I have been playing around with these in actionscript and processing but it would be ideal to have it right in Rhino. I bet this is possible but I have never seen it done - has anyone else seen anything like this? It would be good to have a point of reference...

thanks
