About Site / Hey
« on: February 11, 2010, 12:17:17 PM »
Hi Ivan and everyone else!
It's been a while I don't come to the site and more than a year I don't use rhino, so I'll probably have to start all these tuts again since i forgot everything =(
Great to see the site is still around, I'll start coming back little by little!
I see it grow, congrats!

about the line weight you touch them in Illustrator, I don't know what you mean... To make things easier what I do is to have different objects in different layers so I then select all that is in that layer and apply the wight and colour more quickly.
if it's not penguin then no idea what it is...

Ask for help / Re: Before render
« on: November 18, 2008, 04:35:09 PM »
You don't really need to convert everything to mesh since it does it automatically, but if you want more control on what's rendered then you might. Render engines never render nurbs because it would take a lot of time, that's why it converts everything to mesh without you even noticing. In my case rarely convert my objects to meshes.
About the render engine, maxwell will achieve the best results, but the render will take a lot longer too. With vray you get fantastic results and in much shorter time than maxwell.

Modeling / Re: Filling Holes on Surface
« on: November 18, 2008, 04:25:57 PM »
what you can do is make a NetworkSrf . Duplicate the edge of the hole and use other draw other curves that intersect it to define the shape of the surface. Is like a Sweep but more complex and lets you do more controlled shapes. With history on, you'll be able to change the curves and the surface will change accordingly.
No idea about saving selections but there must be a way of doing so. Same thing about coordinates, maybe someone knows how to do this.

Make2D is a command in Rhino for it to give you the contour lines of your object so you can use them afterwards in Illustrator for example.

Ask for help / Re: Heightfield from Image - ADVICE

you want the world to be part of the model in rhino or you want it to be rendered that way? If you want it to be part of the model, what you need are the curves, not an image. So you go to Illustrator, trace the image, export the curves into rhino and extrude. If you want them to be in the render and not in the model you go to the material of the object (if you're using vray) and apply the texture as a bump map or a displacement map. You should apply that material only to the round surface of the coin, not the sides.

I don't think these renders were done with vray, my guess it's penguin. I never used it so i don't know how to achieve this, but as far as I know it's very simple to use.
However if you do want to use vray, what I usually do when I want to accomplish something like this is make my render, and then a make2D of the perspective so I can use those lines in Illustrator and put them on top, change colours, etc.

Rendering / Re: vray settings nightmare
« on: October 26, 2008, 10:05:42 AM »
I don't have much time right now to go through your files, but I can say you, there are no mystery settings. What you have in the Vray option is the only thing you have. I don't know what the problem is, it might be you are not copying your setting well, or you are not using the same materials, or there is a light source you didn't export, or the setting in that light are different. If you are doing the vray manual I assume you are new to the app, so don't try to find something that doesn't exist, just save the settings and load them whenever you need them, in time you will understand them

Ask for help / Filleting
« on: October 25, 2008, 04:38:35 PM »
I'm having a problem when filleting a corner. My radius is much bigger than the angles between the edges, so i don't get filler in the corner. If i use patch command and then render I can see some weirdness in that corner... Is there a quick way of solving this? It doesn't have to be perfect, but it needs to look good in the render.

Thanks

Ask for help / Re: Rectangular Light Frustrations
« on: October 25, 2008, 04:33:24 PM »
Hmm you could orient the Cplane to your rectangular light. In Front, top etc menu you right click, go to Cplane, 3 points (for example) and select 3 corners of your light so that the cplane is aligned to that light and you'll be able to rotate move etc vis a vis that Cplane. Does that help or I understood wrong again?

Hmm why would u want to snap an object to a rectangular light? You want to use this kind of light when you want a smooth shadow, so you'll want to move it from the object. Uncheck No decay if it's still on, that will make your render know the distance between the objects and the light. Try the basic tutorial i made for rendering in vray with rectangular lights, it's easy to follow and it may help you

Ask for help / Re: Rhino vs AliasStudio
« on: October 12, 2008, 03:32:10 PM »
Well, I started looking at some tutorials about modeling in AliasStudio, and it seems absolutely great. The thing is that it has soooo many functions that it may be overwhelming. The interface looks a lot like Maya, and there is that menu that appears where you have the mouse that is great for working fast. I don't have the time right now to investigate more on this, or the time to learn it (it seems difficult to start with so many commands), but if any of you guys can it's really worth it. It's a pity they don't have it for Mac and i guess they never will =(

p.d: the surfacing tools are really powerfull, nothing to do with the ones in rhino and really time savers

You could also map your image to the environment instead of it having a color. You will want to use hdr images though. This is situated in the Vray menu (that's the render soft I use), in Options, Environment. There you click the M besides Skylight and Background and you map it there.

Ask for help / Re: Rhino vs AliasStudio

Hey bnlake!

I agree with all you say about Rhino, i consider myself as an intermediate user and learned it really quickly. Now they are porting it to Mac, so it is another plus. I know if you compare Rhino to Maya, Max, Lightwave, etc for modeling precise objects it's the best one. But how about AliasStudio (also known as StudioTools)? It also works almost exclusively with nurbs and they say it's really really precise, much more than rhino, at least that's what I read. There is even a guide in Alias site to move from Rhino to Alias so I guess it's more complete. It would be great if someone familiar with that software could give an opinion.

About the UV map, yes, it sucks in rhino... When i needed to do this I used UVMapper and there is another one really good, only for UVs that I can't remember the name. But you need to mesh your model, export it as .obj, open it in one prog, then another, it's a little pain in the ass. It would be great if we had something like they have in Max or Maya. I saw yesterday though, there is a new plugin for Modo for it to open .3ds and it's really good for UVmaps and rendering. I didn't try Wings but I may give it a look when i need the uv thing.

I use a Mac Pro at home, and really hate Windows (been a mac user for 19 years), so always log in Mac OS X and run Windows through parallels, so I could use Photoshop, Illustrator etc on my mac side. And rhino doesn't require much ram to work properly, so it doesn't give me any problem. I'm sure AliasStudio requires a lot more, but if it's worth it, I'm willing to use BootCamp sometimes to run Windows natively.

Anyways, thanks for your answer!

Ask for help / Rhino vs AliasStudio
« on: October 11, 2008, 03:17:55 AM »
I know you are all here for learning Rhino and you'll probably defend it overall, but I wanted to know a bit about this program.

For what I've read, it is supposed to be Rhino for the pros, so I'm not sure if that's what I need. What would be better to use in specific situations? Interface, learning curve, modeling etc.

I use rhino for everything I need to model and I render it in Vray, but i saw sometimes the model would be easier with much more control in Alias. When modeling concepts that will not go to RP, which one is faster and easier?

What about rendering? Vray works great for me when making realistic images but it takes a while. I've seen some renders is Alias that look more like a very good hand sketch that I have no idea how to make in Vray.

And last, has anyone tried the sketching in Alias? It seems much more adapted to ID than painter (i have an intuo3) Is it hard? Can you combine these sketches to make a model?

Thanks,

Gery

p.s: i know Rhino is much much more cheaper than AliasStudio, but I'm just wondering which one is better for what
